In the very center of Sulawesi lies a remarkable jewel that contains dense nature, culture, and ancient megalithic structures: Lore Lindu National Park. All of the 2000 square kilometers of the park is a home of rare tropical forests, endemic wildlife such as the anoa and maleo bird, and ancient stone monoliths deployed as archaeological wonders peppered around Indonesia.

The park is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve which further enhances the intricate culture sheltered there. Lore Lindu is a remote and peaceful region that provides exquisite pathways to the elusive nature and history of Sulawesi. Lore Lindu National Park also contains numerous pure lakes, impenetrable forests, and ancient settlements which showcase the proud preserved history and culture of Sulawesi.

    Itinerary

    Welcome to Palu! A bay city guarded by mountain ridges and blessed with white beaches on the front. On arrival, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to the hotel in the city center (30-60 Minutes). We are going to do a short city tour in the afternoon. Return to the hotel for overnight.

    Accommodation: Swiss-Belhotel Palu

    After breakfast, you will go by car heading to Kamarora (around 3-4 hours) which is part of the Lore Lindu National Park. You will go through Sigi-Biromaru to see the areas affected by liquefaction, which in simple terms means that the soil begins to turn into liquid, thus sinking everything on the ground. This was an effect to the 2018 earthquake. You will arrive at Kamarora in the middle of the morning and can spend time exploring the nearby forest. You can take beautiful photos of insects and butterflies. After dinner, we will drive to Wuasa (2-3 hours) for overnight.

    Departing after an early breakfast, we will drive for about 40 minutes and then hiking on the Anasao trek where you can see some protected birds in the highlands, and also be able to see some orchids and carnivorous plants, and endemic pitchers. After that, walk for about 1.5 hours until arriving at the edge of the road near Lake Tambing. You can take pictures of the large rubber trees. After lunch, we will drive about 2 hours to Wanga Lake to see water birds, and head to Watutau (40 minutes), which is a village in Napu Valley. You will see the megaliths in the village while enjoying the beautiful scenery along the journey. Arriving early in the afternoon, you can take a walk in the village. Overnight at a homestay or stay at a local resident’s house in Watutau.

    After breakfast, we will drive for about 3 hours to reach Besoa Valley. On arrival, we are going to do birdwatching throughout the trip. In the afternoon, we continue to see some megaliths and then continue to Doda Village for overnight.

    OPTIONAL: Besides by using car, you can opt to have a little experience of crossing the river from Watutau to Torite by using a bamboo raft. It takes about 2 hours crossing, then from Torite, you can continue by car for another 2 hours. The bamboo raft must be rented at an extra cost from the local residents in Watutau.

    After breakfast at 07.00, you can explore around Besoa Valley. We will walk 4-6 hours through the dense forest to see mammals, birds and megaliths. Highlights of the mammals are: Tonkean Macaca and Sulawesi Dwarf Squirrel. And if lucky (no guarantee): Anoa and Sulawesi dwarf Cuscus or Honey-bear Cuscus. You will visit other megaliths in Hanggira and Lempeuna to spend the day. Overnight at Homestay.

    After an early breakfast, we will trek for 5-7 hours through the forest until we arrive at a campsite in the middle of the forest. We can spot some beautiful birds and mammals watching along the way. Overnight in tents set up near water sources.

    After breakfast, we will continue trekking for 5-7 hours to Bada Valley, stopping briefly at Kolori Waterfall to freshen up, afterwards visit a large megalith called Batu Palindo. At night, you will pass the swinging bridge to Bomba Village. Overnight at Homestay.

    One more day to trek (2-3 hours) through the rice fields and grassy areas around Bada Valley. The journey will start from Bomba Village, then continue to Pada village to see megaliths. After that, you will drive to Badangkai Village to see the buffalo megaliths. Lunch will be served in Runde Village, and at the same time, you can visit local residents who are still actively making bark-clothes, with materials made from fig trees and from other trees that grow in the Bada Valley. In the evening, you will be welcomed by local residents with traditional dance while having dinner. Overnight in the village of Bomba.

    On this day, we will drive (4-6 hours) through the mountain road to Lake Poso. We will stop at the Malei river to see some colors of water, as dark as Coke because of sulfur and other types of rocks. After that, we will continue the journey to Balinese village in Tonusu and to Saluopa Waterfalls. You can take photos and refresh themselves, after that, head to Lake Poso (40-60 minutes) and overnight at Siuri Cottage which is located near a white sandy beach. Enjoy a beautiful evening with a bonfire and fresh water fish barbeque.

    After breakfast, we will check out from the accommodation at 07.30, and head to the small town in Tentena (60 minutes) followed by a tour around Tentena and Poso Lake. We will use a boat to take photos of the scenery and visit Latea. Overnight at the hotel near Lake Poso.

    We will transfer you (7-9 hours) to Palu in the early morning and arrive at noon. If time permits, you can have a short trip around Palu. Overnight at the hotel in Palu.
