When it comes to hiking in Indonesia, Mount Rinjani is the benchmark. It towers at a height of 3,726 meters. The summit gives a view that a “360-degree view” cannot do justice to. It overlooks the Segara Anak lake which is in the center of a volcanic crater. It takes about 2-3 days lead by a guide starting from either Senaru or Sembalun.

2. Bromo Tengger Semeru: A Martian Landscape

Jawa Timur or East Java is home to a national park that houses tracts of land that locals would describe as resembling Mars. You can trek up to the Bromo crater to experience the sunrise and watch as the red smoke billows up into the grey “Sea of Sand.” If you are really brave, you can also summit Mahameru, the peak of Mount Semeru, the tallest point on Java.

3. Kelimutu: The Three-Colored Mystery
In Indonesia, three colored lakes are simply a short walk away, but in other parts of the world, they are not as easily accessible. The town of Moni is a 30-45 min walk away from Mt. Kelimutu. It is an extremely relaxing fun hike with amazing reward. Once you arrive at the summit, you’re rewarded with three lakes. Also, they occasionally change colors because of their mineral content.

4. Komodo National Park: Rugged Island Beauty
The dragons bring the attention, but the country has more than that. Most critics ignore the beautiful adventures available in the area. As you trek up Gunung Ara on Rinca Island or the hills of Padar Island, you are rewarded with stunning views of turquoise bays, and beaches with either white sand or even pink sand.

5. Bidadari Signal Hill: Banyuwangi’s Hidden Gem
If you’d prefer a shorter hike, Bidadari Signal Hill (Bukit Sinyal Bidadari) is only a hike that lasts 30 minutes from Songgon village.
This hike is perfect for beginners. You’ll enjoy views of the Ijen Crater and the surrounding tropical forests.

6. Mount Gede Pangrango: Hiker’s Choice in West Java
Since Jakarta is about 2.5 hours from this trek, this trekking destination is perfect for the weekend hike. If you want some fun, this trek offers lush forests, wet waterfalls, and the beautiful Suryakencana meadow. From the top of Mount Gede (2,958m), you can even see Mount Salak, and on some days, Mount Cereme as well.

7. Bukit Kelam: The Giant Monolith of Kalimantan

Located in the heart of Indonesian Borneo, Kalimantan is the monolith Bukit Kelam. Located deep in Kutai National Park, Bukit Kelam, or Dark Hill, is called the “Throne of Kings.” It takes about 3 – 4 hours to reach the top, where a massive rock stands as a silent witness to history.

8. Puncak Trikora: The High-Altitude Challenge
For serious mountaineers, the highest peak of Puncak Trikora in Papua’s Jayawijaya Mountains is 4,750 m. This is a 4–6 day trek that requires peak physical condition, because it is tough. The sights of tropical glaciers and high-altitude lakes are unlike anything else.

9. Lorentz National Park: The Wilderness Frontier
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Lorentz is immense and enigmatic. This is the park trek for more adventurous souls. Routes can even take hikers to Danau Habbema (Cloud Lake) and the technical ascent of Carstensz Pyramid, the only place with permanent snow in all of Indonesia.

Trekking in the Baliem Valley is well beyond the stunning natural beauty. Cultural appreciation is a must. Walk across the famous yellow bridge that spans the Baliem River, trek through sweet potato (ubi) and yam fields, and finally pass ancient villages that belong to the Dani.
